Managers Manage the Known. Leaders Manage the Unknown.

From my experience in leadership, there are three things that leaders have to do extremely well.
One is learn. You can't lead people if you're not the person who's learning the most in the organization.
The second is listen. When you're a leader, your job is to really make decisions, and many times you don't have perfect information, but a lot of the people around you have perfect information.
And the third one is to actually lead. What I mean by that is managers manage the known things, things that are known and can be accomplished and executed, and it's really about focusing on execution. Leadership, in my mind, is managing the unknown.
So I think there are time periods where sometimes you're a manager and sometimes you're a leader. And when you get into an unknown situation, that is your cue to tag yourself in and lead.
